โš“ From the Helmโš“

From the Helm: When the Ripples Start Coming Back

Iโ€™ve started to notice something lately.

Not in the stats, not in the clicks, not even in the quiet satisfaction of hitting โ€œpublishโ€ on a story I know matters.

Itโ€™s in the messages.

The โ€œhey, can you help us get the word out?โ€

The โ€œwould you mind taking a look at this before we post it?โ€

The โ€œthanks for showing both sides of that โ€” not many people do.โ€

And my personal favouriteโ€ฆ being introduced (only slightly tongue-in-cheek) as the roving reporter of Coochie.

I mean, Iโ€™ll take it.

Because thatโ€™s when you know somethingโ€™s working. Not because youโ€™ve said it isโ€ฆ but because other people start pulling you into their orbit. Asking you to be part of what theyโ€™re building. Trusting you to tell it properly.

That doesnโ€™t happen by accident.

It comes from walking the island. Sitting in on conversations. Listening more than talking (wellโ€ฆ most of the time). And making a genuine effort to show a balanced view, even when it would be far easier to lean one way or the other and be done with it.

Turns out, people notice that.

Even the politicians.

Which, if Iโ€™m honest, still makes me laugh a little. One minute Iโ€™m dodging mozzies in the mangroves or juggling ferry timing like the rest of us, the next Iโ€™m having a proper conversation about community issues with someone who can actually do something about them.

But hereโ€™s the bit thatโ€™s really clicked for me.

This is one of those rare โ€œall boats risingโ€ moments.

The more I help people share what theyโ€™re doing, the more connected the community becomes. The more connected the community becomes,
the more the newsletter grows. The more the newsletter grows, the more reach there is for everyone.

And around it goes.

Itโ€™s not a zero-sum game out here. Thereโ€™s no limited pie where one group wins and another misses out. If anything, itโ€™s the opposite. The more stories we tell, the more things start happening. The more things start happening, the more there is to tell.

Momentum builds in the most unexpected ways.

And look, Iโ€™m not pretending Iโ€™ve suddenly become some kind of official anything. Iโ€™m still just the one wandering around, asking questions, writing things down, and occasionally poking the bear when something doesnโ€™t quite add up.

But if being a โ€œroving reporterโ€ means helping shine a light on whatโ€™s happening hereโ€ฆ

if it means giving people a platform to be seen and heardโ€ฆ

if it means keeping things honest, curious, and just a little bit cheekyโ€ฆ

Then yeah.

Iโ€™ll happily wear that.

Because if we keep this going โ€” the sharing, the connecting, the backing each other in โ€” we all win

.

And thatโ€™s a pretty good place to be steering from.

Rebecca Young MP - Mobile Office Visit

I popped into Coochie Island Beach Bar & Grill on Sunday for Rebecca Youngโ€™s mobile officeโ€ฆ and what started as a casual drop-in turned into one of those very โ€œCoochieโ€ conversations that covered everything from ambulance logistics (again), to dog parks, to the ever-reliable mainland parking debate. But tucked in amongst it all was something a bit more interestingโ€ฆ the future of the old Education Department site, and what it could become if the community leans in. Thereโ€™s no big announcement (yet), but thereโ€™s definitely something worth paying attention toโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ‘‰ Join the conversation here.

Found this in the form to register for upcoming opportunities to meet and chat with Rebecca directly. Talk about a long term plan! Had a chuckle.

You can register for Rebecca's upcoming events at a date more suitable to your life time here.

Coochie Community Shopping Service - important update!

If getting groceries from Coochie feels like a full-day mission, the Coochie Community Shopping Service has just become a lot more relevant. Now open to all residents (with priority for seniors and people with disabilities), CCSS collects online orders from **Coles and delivers them to your door. A recent membership drive was quiet, but with **Woolworths adding a $20 island delivery fee, thatโ€™s likely to change fast. The service runs fortnightly (for now), costs $5/year plus $15 per delivery, and is even fundraising for a refrigerated truck as demand grows. Quietly efficient, community-run, and probably about to get a lot busier. Read more...

Bushcare Innes St working bee

Coochie Bushcare had a great roll-up this morning (last weekend) to work in the Innes Street block.

Over the years grass clippings and green waste have been dumped in the wetland verge including the invasive Plectranthus ground cover and Desmodium (velcro vine).

It was lovely to see Rubus Parvifolius (native raspberry) spreading through the area.

Ochna and palm trees were also removed to bring more light into the wetland bush.

Thanks to all who attended.

Thanks to Lee Steindl for this information and photos (that I've turned into a video - see below)

Native Raspberry

(Rubus parvifolius) a tasty morsel

Some edible plants require careful identification and a bit of caution. Othersโ€ฆ look exactly like what they are. Native Raspberry is one of the easier wins on Coochiemudlo Island. Small, sweet, and often snapped up by birds before you even notice them, these little berries are a reminder that not everything growing wild is off-limits. Read more here...

Love the Library: Conversations with Local Authors ๐Ÿ“š

Introducing local Author Rob Boult ๐Ÿ“š

Soโ€ฆ if three kids knock on your car window in a stormโ€ฆ what do you do?

No, seriously.

Youโ€™re sitting there, rain coming down sideways, visibility = zero, minding your own businessโ€ฆ and tap tap tap.

Three kids.

Drenched. Quiet. Wanting to get in.

Rob Boult had that exact moment years ago.

At the time? Just weird.

Fast forward a few decadesโ€ฆ he stumbles across a story about black-eyed children (which, frankly, sounds like something you donโ€™t Google after 9pm), and suddenly that old memory goes from โ€œhuhโ€ to โ€œhang on a minuteโ€ฆโ€

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how A Black-Eyed Memory: They Are Watching was born.

Now hereโ€™s the bit I loveโ€ฆ

Rob didnโ€™t set out to be an author. He set out to get this thing out of his head before it drove him slightly mad. What came out first was about 40,000 wordsโ€ฆ and what followed was the real adventure.

Rewrites. Edits. Cutting chunks he actually liked (rude). Getting feedback from familyโ€ฆ including one review that was less โ€œconstructive criticismโ€ and more โ€œemotional damageโ€ ๐Ÿ˜…

But he kept going.

And what he ended up with is a story people are finishing in one sittingโ€ฆ then immediately asking, โ€œOkayโ€ฆ but what happens next?โ€

(Yes, thereโ€™s more coming. Heโ€™s not done. Not even close.)

Weโ€™re teeing up a live author interview at the library, plus a proper local launch, which means youโ€™ll get to meet Rob, hear how this all unfolded, and ask him the important questionsโ€ฆ like:

๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œDid those kids actually have black eyes?โ€
๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œWhy three?โ€
๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œAnd should we all be slightly concerned?โ€

Because hereโ€™s the uncomfortable partโ€ฆ

This story didnโ€™t come out of nowhere.

It came from something that actually happened.

Sleep well ๐Ÿ˜

If you haven't seen the story from last week about how valuable the library is, especially for isolated people who can't get out and about much, you can check it out here

Coochie Paddlers - room with a view

Sunrise, Salt Air and a Whole Lot of Smiles

If youโ€™ve ever stood on the shoreline at dawn and thought, โ€œI should be doing something with this view,โ€ hereโ€™s your sign.

The local outrigger paddlers meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.15am for a 6.30am start, and itโ€™s one of the best-kept secrets for starting your day right. Itโ€™s free, itโ€™s welcoming, and no, you donโ€™t need to be an elite athlete who drinks kale smoothies for breakfast.

Paddling an outrigger canoe builds full-body strength without punishing your joints. Youโ€™ll work your core, shoulders and legs while getting a solid cardio workout, all without staring at a gym wall. Itโ€™s fitness disguised as fun. The kind where youโ€™re too busy laughing to notice youโ€™re actually working hard.

But hereโ€™s the real magic. Itโ€™s the camaraderie. Thereโ€™s something about being on the water at sunrise, paddling in rhythm, that bonds people quickly. Itโ€™s friendly, frolicking, fitness-inducing and genuinely good for the soul. Youโ€™ll leave energised, salty-haired and slightly smug that youโ€™ve already conquered the day before most people have found their car keys.

If youโ€™d like to give it a go, contact Helen on 0414 533 781 and sheโ€™ll point you in the right direction.

Early mornings never looked so good. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿšฃโ€โ™€๏ธ
