โ From the Helmโ
Following on from last weekโs discussion about the new rules for dogs travelling on the ferry and barge, this week Iโve written an article about gently introducing your beloved furry sidekick to a muzzle, crate or carrier, should that become part of their travel routine.
For some people, the article has been genuinely helpful. For others, the changes themselves have understandably stirred up frustration, sadness and concern. Our dogs are family, after all. Nobody particularly enjoys the idea of extra restrictions or changing routines that have worked for years.
Itโs also worth saying clearly that having an opinion is completely OK. Expressing concerns respectfully is part of healthy community conversation.
Most people simply want whatโs best for their animals while still being able to access essential transport safely and without stress.
Where these conversations become most useful, though, is when they move beyond venting and toward constructive action.
Because if you feel strongly about something, chances are youโre not the only one.
Transport policies and public regulations generally donโt change because of a few frustrated comments on Facebook. They change when communities communicate clearly, calmly and consistently through the proper channels.
That doesnโt mean people have to agree with the rules. It simply means that constructive feedback tends to travel further than outrage. A few practical ways people can make their views known include:
Importantly, real-life examples are often far more powerful than anger alone.
For example:
One invites discussion. The other tends to shut it down.
For anyone wishing to provide feedback or ask questions, here are some useful starting points: Useful ContactsTranslink Feedback & Enquiries Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads People can also contact their local state member if they believe broader regional transport policies are creating unintended impacts for island communities.
At the end of the day, most people are trying to navigate the same thing: balancing safety requirements, practical realities and the wellbeing of much-loved dogs.
Not always simple. Rarely black and white.
But Coochieโs usually at its best when people work together toward solutions rather than simply firing up in the comments section of Facey. Even if the comments occasionally arrive with a little extra spice.
Safe travels and smooth seas

Thereโs a particular kind of magic that happens on Coochie just after dawn.
The ferries are quieter. The kookaburras are still carrying on like unpaid town criers. The water often looks almost suspiciously calm. And out near the bay, cutting across the glassy surface with rhythmic precision, youโll sometimes spot the Coochie Outriggers already well into their morning paddle.
Not bad for a bunch of people who insist theyโre โjust having a bit of fun.โ |

The Innes Street bushcare site is thriving after recent rain and sunshine, with fishbone fern now nearly eliminated thanks to dedicated volunteer efforts.
Volunteers will next meet on Saturday, May 16 at 8:30 am to tackle corky passion vine, widespread asparagus fern, and to plant more native species in the adjoining bushland.
New residents are warmly invited to join and lend a handโfresh help is always highly valued.
Bushcare HQ is also working closely with contractors to clear large amounts of invasive Singapore daisy before the upcoming June working bee, allowing volunteers to focus on finer restoration.
Meanwhile, Member for Redlands Rebecca Young will host the Emerald Fringe Forum at The Rec Club on Tuesday, May 19, 9โ11 am, offering updates and funding news for the cherished Emerald Fringe.
Community participation is encouraged to help shape the future of this local natural treasure. Read More... |

Coochie Paddlers - room with a view |
Sunrise, Salt Air and a Whole Lot of Smiles If youโve ever stood on the shoreline at dawn and thought, โI should be doing something with this view,โ hereโs your sign. The local outrigger paddlers meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.15am for a 6.30am start, and itโs one of the best-kept secrets for starting your day right. Itโs free, itโs welcoming, and no, you donโt need to be an elite athlete who drinks kale smoothies for breakfast.
Paddling an outrigger canoe builds full-body strength without punishing your joints. Youโll work your core, shoulders and legs while getting a solid cardio workout, all without staring at a gym wall. Itโs fitness disguised as fun. The kind where youโre too busy laughing to notice youโre actually working hard.
But hereโs the real magic. Itโs the camaraderie. Thereโs something about being on the water at sunrise, paddling in rhythm, that bonds people quickly. Itโs friendly, frolicking, fitness-inducing and genuinely good for the soul. Youโll leave energised, salty-haired and slightly smug that youโve already conquered the day before most people have had their first coffee.
If youโd like to give it a go, contact Helen on 0414 533 781 and sheโll point you in the right direction.
