โš“ From the Helmโš“

Following on from last weekโ€™s discussion about the new rules for dogs travelling on the ferry and barge, this week Iโ€™ve written an article about gently introducing your beloved furry sidekick to a muzzle, crate or carrier, should that become part of their travel routine.

For some people, the article has been genuinely helpful. For others, the changes themselves have understandably stirred up frustration, sadness and concern. Our dogs are family, after all. Nobody particularly enjoys the idea of extra restrictions or changing routines that have worked for years.

Itโ€™s also worth saying clearly that having an opinion is completely OK. Expressing concerns respectfully is part of healthy community conversation.

Most people simply want whatโ€™s best for their animals while still being able to access essential transport safely and without stress.

Where these conversations become most useful, though, is when they move beyond venting and toward constructive action.

Because if you feel strongly about something, chances are youโ€™re not the only one.

Transport policies and public regulations generally donโ€™t change because of a few frustrated comments on Facebook. They change when communities communicate clearly, calmly and consistently through the proper channels.

That doesnโ€™t mean people have to agree with the rules. It simply means that constructive feedback tends to travel further than outrage.

A few practical ways people can make their views known include:

  • Submitting respectful feedback directly to Translink
  • Contacting the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads
  • Writing to local state representatives
  • Gathering community feedback that focuses on practical impacts and possible solutions
  • Requesting a review period once the policy has been in place for a while
  • Explaining the unique challenges island residents may face compared with mainland commuters

Importantly, real-life examples are often far more powerful than anger alone.

For example:
โ€œHereโ€™s the difficulty this creates for elderly residents travelling with larger dogsโ€
is more likely to start a productive conversation than:
โ€œThis is ridiculous and nobody thought this through.โ€

One invites discussion. The other tends to shut it down.

For anyone wishing to provide feedback or ask questions, here are some useful starting points:

Useful Contacts

Translink Feedback & Enquiries
Phone: 13 12 30
Translink Feedback and Enquiries

Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads
Phone: 13 23 80
TMR Compliments and Complaints

People can also contact their local state member if they believe broader regional transport policies are creating unintended impacts for island communities.

At the end of the day, most people are trying to navigate the same thing: balancing safety requirements, practical realities and the wellbeing of much-loved dogs.

Not always simple. Rarely black and white.

But Coochieโ€™s usually at its best when people work together toward solutions rather than simply firing up in the comments section of Facey. Even if the comments occasionally arrive with a little extra spice.

Safe travels and smooth seas

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’šNEW RULES FOR DOGS ON FERRY๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’š

Image created with a bit of help from AI

TL:DR

With the new ferry rules meaning dogs may need to be muzzled or crated, the kindest thing you can do is start preparing early and go very slowly.

Dogs cope far better when muzzles and crates are introduced calmly at home, rather than suddenly during stressful moments like ferry trips or vet visits. Let them explore at their own pace, reward curiosity, and build positive associations over time.

The goal isnโ€™t compliance through force. Itโ€™s helping your dog feel safe, calm and emotionally secure during change.

And yesโ€ฆ expect at least a few dramatically betrayed dog faces along the way ๐Ÿ˜ž

The RFDS Medical Chest

โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ’ŠThe Locked Box Quietly Protecting Coochieโš•๏ธ๐Ÿ’Š

Coochiemudlo Island has access to a Royal Flying Doctor Service medical chest because the island is officially classified as a remote community due to limited after-hours access to mainland medical services.

The chest contains a range of prescription medications, including antibiotics, inhalers, childrenโ€™s medicines and emergency treatments, which can only be accessed after an assessment by an RFDS doctor.

One island resident shared how the service helped treat her suspected pneumonia over a long weekend, with medication delivered within 40 minutes after a video consultation with an RFDS doctor, potentially preventing a hospital trip.

The service is run locally by a team of trained volunteers, who donโ€™t need medical backgrounds but do follow strict procedures and confidentiality rules.

The biggest surprise?

Everyone interviewed said the same thing:

Itโ€™s much easier, faster and more accessible than people realise.

Thereโ€™s a particular kind of magic that happens on Coochie just after dawn.

The ferries are quieter. The kookaburras are still carrying on like unpaid town criers. The water often looks almost suspiciously calm. And out near the bay, cutting across the glassy surface with rhythmic precision, youโ€™ll sometimes spot the Coochie Outriggers already well into their morning paddle.

Not bad for a bunch of people who insist theyโ€™re โ€œjust having a bit of fun.โ€

The Innes Street bushcare site is thriving after recent rain and sunshine, with fishbone fern now nearly eliminated thanks to dedicated volunteer efforts.

Volunteers will next meet on Saturday, May 16 at 8:30 am to tackle corky passion vine, widespread asparagus fern, and to plant more native species in the adjoining bushland.

New residents are warmly invited to join and lend a handโ€”fresh help is always highly valued.

Bushcare HQ is also working closely with contractors to clear large amounts of invasive Singapore daisy before the upcoming June working bee, allowing volunteers to focus on finer restoration.

Meanwhile, Member for Redlands Rebecca Young will host the Emerald Fringe Forum at The Rec Club on Tuesday, May 19, 9โ€“11 am, offering updates and funding news for the cherished Emerald Fringe.

Community participation is encouraged to help shape the future of this local natural treasure.

The Best of Redlands

The Redlands Is Handing Out Some Well-Deserved Recognition

You know those people.

The ones who quietly get things doneโ€ฆ organise the thing, show up early, stay late, never make a fussโ€ฆ and somehow hold half the community together without anyone really noticing?

Well. Someone finally decided they deserve a proper shout-out.

A new initiative called โ€œBest of the Redlandsโ€ has just been launched, and itโ€™s all about celebrating the locals who make this place what it is. The ones who donโ€™t usually end up in headlines but absolutely should.

Local MPs Rebecca Young, Russell Field and Amanda Stoker are behind it, with winners to be announced on Queensland Day, June 6.

And hereโ€™s the good bitโ€ฆ

Itโ€™s not a panel deciding everything behind closed doors. Itโ€™s us. This Isnโ€™t About Big Names. Itโ€™s About Real People. The idea is simple.

Nominate someone you reckon is doing good things.

Could be:

  • The volunteer who somehow runs three groups and still remembers everyoneโ€™s name
  • The small business owner who goes above and beyond (you know the one)
  • The coach whoโ€™s basically raising half the kids on the island
  • Or that quiet legend who justโ€ฆ helps. All the time.

There are a stack of categories too. From Redlands Legend (big shoes, but we know a few) through to Rising Stars, local businesses, community groups, even best places to eatโ€ฆ and a Peopleโ€™s Choice where the community gets the final say.

So yesโ€ฆ this could absolutely turn into a bit of friendly rivalry. Weโ€™ll allow it.

Why This One Actually Matters

Awards can sometimes feel a bitโ€ฆ glossy.

This one feels different. Because if you live around here, you already know the truth: this place runs on people who care. Not systems. Not structures. People.

The ones who give their time, their energy, their weekendsโ€ฆ and occasionally their sanity.

This is just a chance to point at them and say,
โ€œHey. We see you.โ€

Got Someone in Mind? You probably do. That person just popped into your head, didnโ€™t they? Good. Thatโ€™s your sign.

๐Ÿ‘‰ You can nominate here:
Nominate for Best of the Redlands

And if nothing else, itโ€™s a nice reminderโ€ฆ
weโ€™re surrounded by more good people than we sometimes realise.

Might be worth saying it out loud.

Coochie Paddlers - room with a view

Sunrise, Salt Air and a Whole Lot of Smiles

If youโ€™ve ever stood on the shoreline at dawn and thought, โ€œI should be doing something with this view,โ€ hereโ€™s your sign.

The local outrigger paddlers meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.15am for a 6.30am start, and itโ€™s one of the best-kept secrets for starting your day right. Itโ€™s free, itโ€™s welcoming, and no, you donโ€™t need to be an elite athlete who drinks kale smoothies for breakfast.

Paddling an outrigger canoe builds full-body strength without punishing your joints. Youโ€™ll work your core, shoulders and legs while getting a solid cardio workout, all without staring at a gym wall. Itโ€™s fitness disguised as fun. The kind where youโ€™re too busy laughing to notice youโ€™re actually working hard.

But hereโ€™s the real magic. Itโ€™s the camaraderie. Thereโ€™s something about being on the water at sunrise, paddling in rhythm, that bonds people quickly. Itโ€™s friendly, frolicking, fitness-inducing and genuinely good for the soul. Youโ€™ll leave energised, salty-haired and slightly smug that youโ€™ve already conquered the day before most people have had their first coffee.

If youโ€™d like to give it a go, contact Helen on 0414 533 781 and sheโ€™ll point you in the right direction.

Early mornings never looked so good. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿšฃโ€โ™€๏ธ
