From the Helm

When Familiar Things Shift

One thing about living on a small island is that even a small change can ripple through the community surprisingly quickly.

Move the pharmacy script drop-off a few metres, introduce a new booking system, put netting across a familiar nesting place, or move a working bee from Zone 1 into Zone 2, and suddenly people, birds and occasionally entire phone systems are trying to work out where they belong.

This week’s newsletter has a bit of all of that.

The pharmacy script drop-off point has moved to the Curlew Café, on the side of the building beside the AED. It’s a simple change once you know about it. Rather less simple if you’re standing at the Surf Lifesaving Clubhouse wondering where everybody went.

Our local Amity Trader office is also navigating a new booking system implementation from 10 to 17 August. The phones have been ringing continuously while staff learn the new system and continue helping customers. A little patience and kindness will go a long way this week. Technology is marvellous, right up until it decides everyone needs a character-building exercise.

Bushcare, meanwhile, is moving forward in the best possible way.

At Saturday morning’s working bee, the team progresses from Zone 1 into Zone 2 along Innes Street. Because the three zones are roughly equal in length, that means they have now completed a third of their two-year goal of clearing the northern edge of the wetlands. That is no small achievement, especially when it has been accomplished one working bee, one patch and one legendary Bushcare morning tea at a time.

Then there are the welcome swallows.

They returned to the island ready to roost, nest and raise their young, only to find themselves shut out of the places they have traditionally used. Their story is uncomfortable, but it deserves to be told. These tiny birds don’t understand contractors, exclusion netting or bureaucratic buck-passing. They simply know that home was there when they left, and now it isn’t.

Perhaps that is the thread running through this week’s stories.

Change is inevitable, but how we manage it matters. Who or what gets displaced matters. Clear communication matters. And a little consideration for the people, wildlife and community sharing this small patch of paradise matters more than we sometimes realise.

Have a read, take note of the practical changes, and if the plight of our little feathered neighbours ruffles your feathers too, there are some simple ways you can help.

Until next week,

You may not notice me at first, darting across the sky above the jetty, chasing insects on the wing. I’m the one with the glossy blue-black feathers, the rusty throat and the neat little fork in my tail.

I’m a welcome swallow, and this is where I come to raise my family.

I remember the ledge beneath the shelter. It was protected from the rain, shaded from the harsh afternoon sun and high enough to keep my babies safe....

“If you see a trapped bird, don’t just hope it figures it out! Just recently, I had to help one get out of netting. Call RSPCA fast, folks!”

Coochiemudlo Island in Queensland’s Redland Bay holds a rich community history shaped by generous locals like Louisa Toogood.

In the late 1960s, families flocked to its shores, creating lasting memories in humble beach shacks that lined the island’s edge.

Everyday life was rugged, from outdoor toilets to cooking with rainwater, but residents found joy and built deep friendships amid the simplicity.

Children roamed freely, and newcomers—welcomed by islanders such as Louisa—often found comfort during uncertain times.

Today, original shacks stand beside new homes, echoing a past marked by creativity and resilience.

Community groups work to protect these stories, organizing tours and heritage events that celebrate the island’s unique legacy.

Louisa’s spirit endures through acts of kindness and inclusive traditions that help define modern Coochiemudlo.

🌿 Bushcare Hits a Milestone! 🌿

This Saturday morning, Coochiemudlo Bushcare is moving from Zone 1 into Zone 2 along Innes Street.

New and existing members are warmly invited to join us for some rewarding work in a beautiful environment, followed, of course, by our traditional Bushcare morning tea. That tradition has been going strong for 30 years, so you know they’ve had plenty of time to perfect it. 😉

Coochie Paddlers - room with a view 🛶

Sunrise, Salt Air and a Whole Lot of Smiles

If you’ve ever stood on the shoreline at dawn and thought, “I should be doing something with this view,” here’s your sign.

The local outrigger paddlers meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.15am for a 6.30am start, and it’s one of the best-kept secrets for starting your day right. It’s free, it’s welcoming, and no, you don’t need to be an elite athlete who drinks kale smoothies for breakfast.

Paddling an outrigger canoe builds full-body strength without punishing your joints. You’ll work your core, shoulders and legs while getting a solid cardio workout, all without staring at a gym wall. It’s fitness disguised as fun. The kind where you’re too busy laughing to notice you’re actually working hard.

But here’s the real magic. It’s the camaraderie. There’s something about being on the water at sunrise, paddling in rhythm, that bonds people quickly. It’s friendly, frolicking, fitness-inducing and genuinely good for the soul. You’ll leave energised, salty-haired and slightly smug that you’ve already conquered the day before most people have had their first coffee.

If you’d like to give it a go, contact Helen on 0414 533 781 and she’ll point you in the right direction.

Early mornings never looked so good. 🌊🚣‍♀️
