β βFrom the Helmββ Day 2 in drydock, and it’s newsletter day! Thankfully, the trip here was uneventful. I didn’t end up parking by braille at the wharf. Umm, I’m not saying I’ve done THAT before, and I’m not saying I haven’t either! (It was only a little bump and hole, easily fixed!!)
Project management skills have their perks. Managing a boat haul-out when I can barely change a lightbulb is a bigger challenge than I’d like to admit out loud, and I'm glad I'm not on the tools, and I haven't cried...yet.
I’ve got a few really amazing folks helping me, and I appreciate them very much. Sleeves rolled, dust masks on, sanders in hand, and the gunky green pond slime that “decorated” the bottom of my boat has been evaporated!
There’s one hole in the wall at the front starboard side, and another that’ll need to be cut on the port side. One was expected. The other wasn’t. I’m not surprised, though. The cyclone damage let in more water than I’d anticipated, and it’s taken waaayyy too long to get her fixed. That's on me.
That’s my week. You’ll find this edition of Coochie Community Online a little thin, and I’m grateful for your understanding.
Best get on with it, then! Editor, Coochie Community Online

Are we seeing the whole picture when it comes to Redland City Council's proposed changes to animal management laws on Coochiemudlo Island? Two people can examine the exact same council proposal, reach completely opposite conclusions, and both present entirely reasonable arguments.
From wildlife advocates and local business owners to dog trainers, parents, and systems thinkers, at least twenty-one unique perspectives shape this conversation.
To add to the fray, discrepancies between explanatory notes, maps, and the draft Register of Animals in Public Places raise vital questions about whether the community is being asked the right questions before the consultation closes on November 22, 2026. Before you tick "YES" or "NO" on the Redland City Council's consultation page, discover which perspective you are looking from and which crucial angles might be missing. On Coochiemudlo Island, a native plant nursery draws attention to orchids that are easy to miss and difficult to protect.
These Australian native orchids depend on healthy habitat, soil fungi and pollinating insects, leaving them vulnerable to land clearing, weeds and climate pressures.
Among the islandβs terrestrial species are the pink-flowered shepherdβs crook orchid, tiny pixie caps and greenhood orchids that retreat underground in hotter weather.
Even ground that looks empty may shelter living orchids beneath the surface.
Other species grow on trees or climb through vegetation, while the threatened common swamp orchid also faces habitat disturbance, changing water conditions and theft.
The nursery showcases locally suited plants and lists Tuesday opening hours from 9 to 11 in the morning.
It acknowledges the Quandamooka people as Traditional Owners and encourages locals and visitors to protect habitat and leave wild orchids undisturbed. Read More... |

Coochie Paddlers - room with a view πΆ |
Sunrise, Salt Air and a Whole Lot of Smiles If you’ve ever stood on the shoreline at dawn and thought, “I should be doing something with this view,” here’s your sign. The local outrigger paddlers meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.15am for a 6.30am start, and it’s one of the best-kept secrets for starting your day right. It’s free, it’s welcoming, and no, you don’t need to be an elite athlete who drinks kale smoothies for breakfast.
Paddling an outrigger canoe builds full-body strength without punishing your joints. You’ll work your core, shoulders and legs while getting a solid cardio workout, all without staring at a gym wall. It’s fitness disguised as fun. The kind where you’re too busy laughing to notice you’re actually working hard.
But here’s the real magic. It’s the camaraderie. There’s something about being on the water at sunrise, paddling in rhythm, that bonds people quickly. It’s friendly, frolicking, fitness-inducing and genuinely good for the soul. You’ll leave energised, salty-haired and slightly smug that you’ve already conquered the day before most people have had their first coffee.
If you’d like to give it a go, contact Helen on 0414 533 781 and she’ll point you in the right direction.
Early mornings never looked so good. ππ£βοΈ |
