โš“ From the Helmโš“

From the Helm: Dogs, Ferries, and the Stuff Beneath the Surface

Well. That escalated quickly.

One minute we were all happily debating the weather and whether the mozzies have become sentient this year, and the next minute the island was deep in discussions about dogs on ferries, muzzles, crates, transport rules, and whether anyone could physically convince a cavoodle to cooperate with any of it.

The new ferry and barge rules around dogs have definitely stirred emotions. Thatโ€™s understandable. For many of us, our dogs arenโ€™t โ€œpetsโ€ in the traditional sense. Theyโ€™re family members with fur, opinions, and occasionally stronger personalities than the humans holding the lead.

I touched on the broader changes in this weekโ€™s main article, particularly around how the passenger ferry now operates within the wider Translink system, which means standardised rules and procedures are arriving alongside the 50c fares and tap-on thingies.

Love it or loathe it, island life is brushing up against mainland systems a little more these days.

But rather than getting stuck in the frustration loop, Iโ€™d really like to help move the conversation toward practical support and confidence.

So next week, Iโ€™ll be sharing a piece that approaches the situation from a calmer, more workable perspective. Not about forcing dogs into muzzles or crates overnight like tiny furry criminals being transported to Alcatraz, but about how to gently and thoughtfully help dogs become more comfortable with these things before theyโ€™re suddenly needed.

Because if thereโ€™s one thing dogs are exceptionally good at, itโ€™s detecting human panic from three suburbs away.

The reality is, the last-minute โ€œjust shove it on and hope for the bestโ€ strategy rarely ends in dignity for anyone involved.

Whatโ€™s struck me most this week though isnโ€™t just the ferry discussion itself. Itโ€™s what sits underneath it.

Connection.

Conversation.

People quietly helping each other figure things out.

One of the best parts of putting this newsletter together is getting out and about and talking to people who are doing interesting things for this community. Some of itโ€™s visible. A lot of it isnโ€™t.

For a sleepy little island, thereโ€™s an astonishing amount happening beneath the surface.

People are checking in on neighbours. Sharing information. Coordinating lifts. Watering gardens. Delivering groceries. Building projects. Running groups. Starting conversations. Solving problems before anyone even notices there was one.

The neighbourhood networks on this island are honestly something special. You donโ€™t fully appreciate how rare that is until youโ€™ve lived somewhere without it.

And while we might occasionally squabble over ferries, dogs, parking, generators, trolley sizes, or whose palm fronds are attempting to annex the footpathโ€ฆ when push comes to shove, this community shows up.

Every single time.

I, for one, am deeply appreciative to be here amongst what is quite possibly the best community on the planet.

No exaggeration haha.

Smooth seas

Dogs, Ferries… and Why This Conversation Isn’t Really About Dogs

This weekโ€™s ferry dog policy announcement sparked exactly the kind of reaction youโ€™d expect on Coochie.

A bit of confusion.

A bit of frustration.

A few deeply offended dogs already practising their โ€œyouโ€™ve ruined my lifeโ€ faces in preparation for muzzle training.

But underneath the debate about muzzles, carriers and ferry rules sits a much bigger shift quietly happening around us.

Because this isnโ€™t really just about dogs.

Itโ€™s about what happens when a tiny island community becomes more connected to a large mainland transport system. Itโ€™s about the trade-offs that arrive alongside 50c fares, integrated ticketing and standardised public transport rules. And itโ€™s about that strange tension between โ€œthe way weโ€™ve always done thingsโ€ and the reality of systems designed for thousands of people, not one little island where half the passengers know each other by first name.

The full article takes a gentle wander through all of it.

The policy changes.

Why theyโ€™re happening.

What it means for dog owners.

And why, despite the grumbling, Coochie will probably do what Coochie always doesโ€ฆ adapt in its own slightly quirky way.

Also: there is a very real possibility some dogs (and quite possibly their humans) will behave like Victorian aristocrats being asked to wear trousers for the first time.

Isabellaโ€™s Umbrella, the new childrenโ€™s story by local author Shane White, began not in a writerโ€™s room but amid the unpredictability of a car park and a heartfelt comment from a granddaughter.

This quiet moment sparked a tale built not with shortcuts, but with years of dedicated drawing and gentle rhyme, coming to life through midnight sketches and countless details.

Though designed for kids, the book offers deeper reflections for adults, exploring how easily we judge others and how stories often leave the biggest truths unresolved.

The mystery deepens across a planned trilogy, challenging the comfort of clear villains and simple explanations.

Shaneโ€™s work invites readers into a world where whatโ€™s โ€œscaryโ€ is sometimes misunderstood, and where curiosity is rewarded.

The first volume is just the beginningโ€”step in now, and discover new perspectives on empathy and community before the story is complete.

The Day Mabel Tried to Rewrite the Ending (Part 3)

What do you do when a library book knows too much about you?

Mabel thought ruining the book would end the problem. A carefully orchestrated โ€œaccidentโ€ involving beetroot juice, a suspiciously dramatic library return, and an eccentric owl perched high above the shelves should have been enough.

Instead?

The book became even more popular.

Now the whole island wants to read itโ€ฆ and Mabel is starting to suspect the story may know far more about her than it should.

This weekโ€™s chapter of Mad Mabel takes a deliciously dark turn involving missing books, bad reviews, curious librarians, and a note that changes everything.

Read the full part three here.

Part 1 is here for those who are new to the story.

Part 2 is here for those who like continuity.

PS/ I'm open to ideas of other adventures Mabel might have. Hit 'reply' and share your inspirations.

ppss/You'll find 'Mad Mabel' by Sally Hepworth and over 100 new titles at the Library on Saturday mornings, 9- 11am.

The Best of Redlands

The Redlands Is Handing Out Some Well-Deserved Recognition

You know those people.

The ones who quietly get things doneโ€ฆ organise the thing, show up early, stay late, never make a fussโ€ฆ and somehow hold half the community together without anyone really noticing?

Well. Someone finally decided they deserve a proper shout-out.

A new initiative called โ€œBest of the Redlandsโ€ has just been launched, and itโ€™s all about celebrating the locals who make this place what it is. The ones who donโ€™t usually end up in headlines but absolutely should.

Local MPs Rebecca Young, Russell Field and Amanda Stoker are behind it, with winners to be announced on Queensland Day, June 6.

And hereโ€™s the good bitโ€ฆ

Itโ€™s not a panel deciding everything behind closed doors. Itโ€™s us. This Isnโ€™t About Big Names. Itโ€™s About Real People. The idea is simple.

Nominate someone you reckon is doing good things.

Could be:

  • The volunteer who somehow runs three groups and still remembers everyoneโ€™s name
  • The small business owner who goes above and beyond (you know the one)
  • The coach whoโ€™s basically raising half the kids on the island
  • Or that quiet legend who justโ€ฆ helps. All the time.

There are a stack of categories too. From Redlands Legend (big shoes, but we know a few) through to Rising Stars, local businesses, community groups, even best places to eatโ€ฆ and a Peopleโ€™s Choice where the community gets the final say.

So yesโ€ฆ this could absolutely turn into a bit of friendly rivalry. Weโ€™ll allow it.

Why This One Actually Matters

Awards can sometimes feel a bitโ€ฆ glossy.

This one feels different. Because if you live around here, you already know the truth: this place runs on people who care. Not systems. Not structures. People.

The ones who give their time, their energy, their weekendsโ€ฆ and occasionally their sanity.

This is just a chance to point at them and say,
โ€œHey. We see you.โ€

Got Someone in Mind? You probably do. That person just popped into your head, didnโ€™t they? Good. Thatโ€™s your sign.

๐Ÿ‘‰ You can nominate here:
Nominate for Best of the Redlands

And if nothing else, itโ€™s a nice reminderโ€ฆ
weโ€™re surrounded by more good people than we sometimes realise.

Might be worth saying it out loud.

Coochie Paddlers - room with a view

Sunrise, Salt Air and a Whole Lot of Smiles

If youโ€™ve ever stood on the shoreline at dawn and thought, โ€œI should be doing something with this view,โ€ hereโ€™s your sign.

The local outrigger paddlers meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.15am for a 6.30am start, and itโ€™s one of the best-kept secrets for starting your day right. Itโ€™s free, itโ€™s welcoming, and no, you donโ€™t need to be an elite athlete who drinks kale smoothies for breakfast.

Paddling an outrigger canoe builds full-body strength without punishing your joints. Youโ€™ll work your core, shoulders and legs while getting a solid cardio workout, all without staring at a gym wall. Itโ€™s fitness disguised as fun. The kind where youโ€™re too busy laughing to notice youโ€™re actually working hard.

But hereโ€™s the real magic. Itโ€™s the camaraderie. Thereโ€™s something about being on the water at sunrise, paddling in rhythm, that bonds people quickly. Itโ€™s friendly, frolicking, fitness-inducing and genuinely good for the soul. Youโ€™ll leave energised, salty-haired and slightly smug that youโ€™ve already conquered the day before most people have had their first coffee.

If youโ€™d like to give it a go, contact Helen on 0414 533 781 and sheโ€™ll point you in the right direction.
