From the Helm⚓

After a few days in bed with the lurgy, I finally found enough energy to drag myself back to the desk and put this newsletter together.

At one point, while staring blankly at the screen and wondering if a nap counted as productive work, I found myself wishing I had a co-editor.

Because the reality is that a one-person operation is wonderfully simple... right up until the one person gets sick.

Thankfully, I bounce back fairly quickly these days. Years of prioritising my health have given me a healing time that I'm deeply grateful for. I've watched family and friends get flattened by the same bugs for a week or more. Even so, it was a timely reminder that if I don't produce the newsletter, nobody does.

That got me thinking about sustainability.

I spent many years working in government. Leaving was a bit like pulling your arm out of a bucket of water. A few ripples, then life carried on exactly as before.

Community initiatives are different.

Many of them exist because one person quietly keeps showing up. They write the newsletter. Open the hall. Organise the group. Make the phone calls. Put the chairs out. Remember the details everyone else forgets.

And while those people rarely seek recognition, they are often carrying far more than anyone realises.

At the same time, I've been reminded recently just how much of Coochie's community life happens completely outside formal structures.

We've got singing groups, writing groups, book groups, exercise groups, spiritual groups and social gatherings that don't rely on grants, constitutions, committees, membership fees or government funding.

They simply exist because people enjoy being together.

To everyone involved in creating and sustaining those spaces, I say: go you.

I love that life continues to happen in spite of the growing layers of red tape that seem to drift across the bay from time to time.

One of the newest grassroots initiatives is the Coochie Street Coordinator Project, with an information session on Saturday 27 June (see article below). It's a simple idea built around neighbours knowing neighbours, and I'd love to see it gain some traction.

As for the newsletter's sustainability problem, there probably isn't a perfect answer. Although, knowing me, I'll ask my AI buddy for suggestions.

Right after I finish this newsletter.

I've already used up most of the brain cells my healing body was prepared to allocate today.

See you next week... hopefully with fewer tissues and more crochet.

On Coochiemudlo Island, a new grassroots initiative is redefining what it means to look out for your neighbours.

The Coochie Street Coordinators program aims to ensure every resident knows exactly who to call when they need help.

Inspired by an informal system used for decades on the mainland—where a cracked garage door each morning signals all is well—the program invites locals to become friendly points of contact in their streets.

Street Coordinators aren’t expected to solve every problem; their real strength is connecting neighbours to each other and to local resources.

Participation is entirely voluntary, and even a small time commitment can make a real difference.

As emergencies and life’s challenges arise, having a trusted neighbour to turn to could be a vital support.

Residents are invited to learn more at the info meeting on Saturday 27 June, 2:00pm at Coochiemudlo Rec Centre.

The Coochie Community Shopping Service Update

The news about our Coochie Shopping Service van is sounding very positive. The Men’s Shed have been amazing. They have got it stripped down, cleaned out and ready for the replacement parts.

The Amazing Danny is working on the rust problem…there just needs to be three straight days of fine weather and it will be sealed and ready.  Our sincere thanks go to these wonderful men.

Will keep everyone posted as the re-launch of the Coochie Community Shopping Service gets closer.

Coochie Paddlers - room with a view

Sunrise, Salt Air and a Whole Lot of Smiles

If you’ve ever stood on the shoreline at dawn and thought, “I should be doing something with this view,” here’s your sign.

The local outrigger paddlers meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.15am for a 6.30am start, and it’s one of the best-kept secrets for starting your day right. It’s free, it’s welcoming, and no, you don’t need to be an elite athlete who drinks kale smoothies for breakfast.

Paddling an outrigger canoe builds full-body strength without punishing your joints. You’ll work your core, shoulders and legs while getting a solid cardio workout, all without staring at a gym wall. It’s fitness disguised as fun. The kind where you’re too busy laughing to notice you’re actually working hard.

But here’s the real magic. It’s the camaraderie. There’s something about being on the water at sunrise, paddling in rhythm, that bonds people quickly. It’s friendly, frolicking, fitness-inducing and genuinely good for the soul. You’ll leave energised, salty-haired and slightly smug that you’ve already conquered the day before most people have had their first coffee.

If you’d like to give it a go, contact Helen on 0414 533 781 and she’ll point you in the right direction.

Early mornings never looked so good. 🌊🚣‍♀️
