β βFrom the Helmββ The stories we haven’t written down yetSome of Coochie’s history is easy to point to. It’s in old photographs, familiar buildings and places that have changed over the years.
But some of it lives only in people’s memories.
Who remembers calling Doug to get to the mainland? Who watched the roads being sealed, or saw the old jetty come down and the new one take its place? And what was it like when the first reenactment of the Flinders Landing arrived?
Those stories might come out over a cuppa, almost as an aside. “Oh, that reminds me…” And suddenly you’re hearing about a Coochie that newer residents never knew.
That’s one reason I’m looking forward to the Seniors Month intergenerational high tea this Saturday, 24 October, from 2–5 pm at the Recreation Club.
There’ll be time to catch up, share a cuppa and hear island stories. Some will be recorded for the Heritage Society, so they can become part of our shared history.
We often think of history as something that happened a very long time ago. But it can be the bakery that disappeared, the farmland that changed, the storm people still talk about, or the neighbour who knew how to get things done when island life required a bit more improvisation.
I suspect there’s a Coochie story that several people remember, each a little differently, and nobody has written down yet. I wonder which one it is.
If you’re coming on Saturday, bring a memory to share. And if you can’t make it, ask someone who’s been here a while about the Coochie they remember. One question might open a door to a whole story.
As a special for Seniors, Val has offered to open the court for a come n try session. She's available from 2.30 - 3.30pm and would appreciate a call or text Val on 0411 728 167 if you're planning on having a dink. Editor, Coochie Community Online

Promotional campaigns encouraging visitors to Coochiemudlo Island raise growing concerns about local infrastructure capacity. Victoria Point car park is already a major bottleneck, identified as the top issue in a recent Coochie Progress Association resident survey. A simple thought experiment shows that 300 visitors would require 75–150 parking spaces, while resident mainland vehicles require around 170 spaces—nearly matching or exceeding the precinct's total capacity of 170–220 spots. Residents are encouraged to sign a petition closing November 24 that calls on Redland City Council to review the shared car and boat-trailer parking setup. Beyond parking, increased tourism places extra strain on waste management—especially with jetty bins removed—and local facilities. While visitors bring economic benefits, residents deserve a meaningful say in shaping a sustainable approach to island tourism. Read More... |

BC | Ben Carter Β· 19 hours ago Could Council look at the boat trailer spaces first? That shared parking setup seems to be where the trouble starts.

Coochie Paddlers - room with a view πΆ |
Sunrise, Salt Air and a Whole Lot of Smiles If you’ve ever stood on the shoreline at dawn and thought, “I should be doing something with this view,” here’s your sign. The local outrigger paddlers meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.15am for a 6.30am start, and it’s one of the best-kept secrets for starting your day right. It’s free, it’s welcoming, and no, you don’t need to be an elite athlete who drinks kale smoothies for breakfast.
Paddling an outrigger canoe builds full-body strength without punishing your joints. You’ll work your core, shoulders and legs while getting a solid cardio workout, all without staring at a gym wall. It’s fitness disguised as fun. The kind where you’re too busy laughing to notice you’re actually working hard.
But here’s the real magic. It’s the camaraderie. There’s something about being on the water at sunrise, paddling in rhythm, that bonds people quickly. It’s friendly, frolicking, fitness-inducing and genuinely good for the soul. You’ll leave energised, salty-haired and slightly smug that you’ve already conquered the day before most people have had their first coffee.
If you’d like to give it a go, contact Helen on 0414 533 781 and she’ll point you in the right direction.
Early mornings never looked so good. ππ£βοΈ |
