Coochiemudlo Island: Register for the latest updates on the island

โ From the Helmโ Thereโs a particular kind of energy that rolls into Coochie with the school holidays. You can feel it before you even see it. Bikes left a little closer to the jetty than usual. Towels slung over shoulders. That slightly chaotic, happy hum of people whoโve decidedโฆ yeah, todayโs a beach day.
And honestly, itโs been a good one.
The islandโs been doing what it does best lately, holding that balance between โwe live hereโ and โyouโre lucky to be visiting.โ Holiday makers are out in full force, kids are back to jetty jumping like itโs an Olympic sport, and the beach has that steady rhythm of families, eskies, and the occasional overly ambitious sandcastle that wonโt survive the tide. (Weโve all been there.)
At the same time, this weekโs newsletter leans into something a bit more grounded.
Thereโs been a noticeable shift in conversations around the island. Not panic, not fear, but awareness. The kind that creeps in when a few โisolated incidentsโ start to feel less isolated. Weโve pulled together whatโs been happening, what it actually means in context, and where Coochie still sits compared to the mainland. Because perspective matters here.
Weโre still a safe placeโฆ just not untouched.
Youโll also see updates that hit closer to day-to-day life. The kind of things that donโt make headlines but quietly shape how we live. The ferry, payments, little system changes that remind us weโre part of a bigger network now, whether we like it or not. Itโs that ongoing shift from โknowing the skipperโ to tapping a card on a machine that definitely doesnโt know your name. Progress, apparently.
And then thereโs the good stuff. Because itโs not all serious. There are stories, updates, and bits and pieces that remind you why people fall in love with this place in the first place. Community efforts ticking along, local initiatives finding their feet, and that underlying sense that when something needs doing, someone here will quietly step up and make it happen.
Thatโs the part I never get tired of. This really is one of those โall boats risingโ moments. The more we share whatโs happening, the more people get involved. The more people get involved, the stronger the community becomes. And round it goes.
So whether youโre here full-time, visiting for the holidays, or just keeping an eye on things from the mainlandโฆ take a moment this week. Watch the kids launching themselves off the jetty like fearless little maniacs. Notice the conversations happening behind the scenes. And maybe, just maybe, appreciate that we get both. The fun and the reality. The sunshine and the substance.
Thatโs Coochie.

โPetition for a safer Coochie โA few speed bumps in the new Translink system on the ferry โCoochie During the War: through the eyes of a 12 year old girl โNew events for April listed!

Crime concerns are rising around Victoria Point and Coochiemudlo Island, with theft and petty property offences increasing at key areas like the ferry car park, jetty, and barge ramps.
Local resident Lulu has launched a petition for brighter lighting and upgraded security cameras, hoping to curb fuel siphoning, number plate theft, and break-ins now common across the corridor.
Even though Coochie remains a low-crime community, the rate of reported property offences has risen over 30% in the past yearโpartly thanks to improved reporting, but also reflecting a troubling pattern.
Weak camera quality and dark areas have meant offenders are rarely identified, allowing small crimes to quietly erode local trust and safety.
Luluโs petition calls for practical upgrades, potentially funded by federal grantsโnot ratepayersโto protect residents and send a clear deterrent signal, urging everyone to report every incident so the true scope is recognised and addressed. Read More... |

๐จWeird charges on Credit/Debit Cards after tapping on the ferry?
Read this before you panicโฆ
A few people have noticed small random amounts (10c, odd figures, even a $3 charge) showing up after using their bank card on the new Translink readers.
It looks dodgyโฆ but itโs usually not. Amity Trader isn't shaking you down for your spare change.
Whatโs happening is the system does little โtestโ charges first, then works out your actual fare later. Those tiny amounts are often temporary and should disappear once everything settles.
That saidโฆ if they donโt disappear after a couple of days, or the total doesnโt make sense, definitely raise it with Translink...read more...

Coochie During the War: through the eyes of a 12 year old girl |
โThe air on Coochiemudlo Island didnโt smell like war. It smelled of salt crusting on mangroves and the sweet, heavy scent of damp earth in the vegetable patch. But eleven-year-old Elsie knew the war was there. She could hear it in the low, rhythmic thrum of the Brisbane Line defenses and the sharp crack of Lee-Enfield rifles echoing from the mainland.
โThe Bay of GiantsโElsie squinted against the midday glare. Out in the Bay, the water was a shimmering sheet of brass. Her big brother, Arthur, was out there somewhere. He was "training," which to Elsie meant sleeping in a canvas tent on the western side of the island that smelled of damp mildew and citronella oil. [^1] |

Coochie Paddlers - room with a view |
Sunrise, Salt Air and a Whole Lot of Smiles If youโve ever stood on the shoreline at dawn and thought, โI should be doing something with this view,โ hereโs your sign. The local outrigger paddlers meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.15am for a 6.30am start, and itโs one of the best-kept secrets for starting your day right. Itโs free, itโs welcoming, and no, you donโt need to be an elite athlete who drinks kale smoothies for breakfast.
Paddling an outrigger canoe builds full-body strength without punishing your joints. Youโll work your core, shoulders and legs while getting a solid cardio workout, all without staring at a gym wall. Itโs fitness disguised as fun. The kind where youโre too busy laughing to notice youโre actually working hard.
But hereโs the real magic. Itโs the camaraderie. Thereโs something about being on the water at sunrise, paddling in rhythm, that bonds people quickly. Itโs friendly, frolicking, fitness-inducing and genuinely good for the soul. Youโll leave energised, salty-haired and slightly smug that youโve already conquered the day before most people have found their car keys.
If youโd like to give it a go, contact Helen on 0414 533 781 and sheโll point you in the right direction.
