βš“ From the Helmβš“

As you well know, the weather is always a solid topic for conversation. For millennia we’ve understood we can’t control it, and talking about it won’t change a thing β€” yet we still do!

And why not? It’s one of those easy connection points for the community. Especially this week, after we copped our first real storm of the season. We had plenty of warning, of course, and could feel the heat and humidity building until we could barely breathe (or see, with sweat stinging our eyes), yet somehow, we still acted surprised when the thunder cracked and the lightning got a bit too close for comfort.

I’ll admit it, I do love me a good storm. And from the chatter in both the Coochie Community and  Coochiemudlo Island Residents Facebook groups, it seems I’m not alone!

While the gardens drank it all in, my main concern was my carboat (that’s a tinnie, for the uninitiated). It was hitched to the back of my houseboat, safely away from the jetty downpipe, or so I thought, when the heavens opened. I had vivid images of it filling with rainwater, tipping over, and me standing helpless on the beach, watching it happen.

Cue action stations! I called a couple of boatie mates who jumped in to help haul it back to the jetty for a good bail-out before dragging it up onto the beach to wait out the rest of the rain. Thank you, legends. I appreciate you more than you know.

There’s never a dull moment for a boatie, and lately, it seems there’s never a dry one either!

πŸŽƒ Happy Halloween for Friday (there's still time to register YOUR house  on the Trick or Treat map) β€” here’s to green lawns, blue skies, and a little sunshine to sail us into the week ahead.

Until next tide,

🏝️ New Subdivision Proposed for Victoria Parade South β›βš’πŸ§°πŸ”¨πŸ˜

Is Coochie prepared for the influx?

A new development application has been lodged for a major subdivision on Coochiemudlo Island, the first of its kind in years.

While development has long been expected, many residents are now questioning whether the island’s fragile infrastructure and environment can cope with what’s coming next…

THE LEGEND OF KEVIN by Roger Whiting

One day while tramping this Island
I saw a quite magical sight
Twas a peacock all in his splendor
I’m so glad he didn’t take flight
Now he strutted hither and dither
The sun on his back was quite strong
He showed his tail with a shiver
I was taken aback, you’re not wrong
I found out he's called Kevin
A dull name for such a magnificent champ
His story is a bit of a sad one
My heart aches for his bad circumstance
The story says he once had a harem
They loved him and he loved them so
But the joy they felt was a problem
For they made an incredible din
So the folks said they just had to go.
A posse rounded up the din makers
And shipped them away so it’s said
All except Kevin the escaper
Too fast to go under their net
So now Kevin wanders our Island
Vainly looking for his sweet girls
Each season he grows his fine plumage
To impress them and make them his wife
But alas it’s all for nothing
For their said to be far far away
The legend is their on some small Island
Missing their man, Oh this sad strife
So if you happen to come across Kevin
Spare a thought for his sad love less life

A True Spooky Story from the High Seas πŸ³βš“οΈ
Halloween Special πŸ‘»

Once upon a time (okay, not that long ago), I somehow became an Amazon Live Influencer, quite possibly the only one in Australia. Feeling bold, I challenged my colleague Nick to a friendly live cook-off. What I didn’t know at the time was that Nick happened to be a graduate of the Raymond Blanc Cookery School, complete with a fully equipped chef’s kitchen.

Me? I was cooking on a boat, with a two-burner gas stove so close together I could only use one at a time without melting something I shouldn’t. πŸ˜…

Despite the odds, the wind (and the occasional wave), we went live every week for over a year, cooking up storms and selling kitchen gadgets on Amazon. The time zones made things interesting, I’d be whipping up dinner while Nick was frying up breakfast, but somehow it worked.

In this particular episode, Nick’s making Chilli Con Carne while I’m brewing Kombucha. Normally we’d cook the same dish, but as I explain in the intro, boat life requires a certain… flexibility (and the occasional plan B when the wind is high and the gas runs low).

We had an absolute blast β€” proof that you don’t need a fancy kitchen to cook up a good laugh and a great story. πŸ˜„
