From the Helm⚓

Ahoy, Coochie crew! ⚓

What a fine voyage we’ve had this past month. The Pirate Day Markets were a sight to behold! Sails hoisted high, treasures aplenty, and more than a few buccaneers about the place 🏴‍☠️. The island was alive with laughter, colour, and good cheer. My thanks to all who came aboard and made it a day to remember.

Out on the shore, another tale unfolds. The curlew chicks have hatched, wee fluff balls now tottering across the sands 🐣. Their watchful mums and dads keep guard, crying long into the night to ward off trouble. If ye spot them on your travels, best give ’em room, every small step they take is a victory of new life upon our island.

And on the waters, the Coochie Paddlers are cutting a steady course 🚣 Three mornings a week, they set out in the outrigger, chasing the sun and sharing a hearty laugh or two. Whether you’ve got sea legs or you’re new to the oar, there’s always a spot aboard for those keen to join the voyage.

So here’s to pirates, paddlers, and proud curlews, just a few of the attractions on this island we call home. May fair winds carry us into another month of Coochie adventures.

Read more (and make sure you check out the videos) on each below.

Together, we’ll build a community resource that every Coochiemudlian (and our ML neighbours) will be glad to have in their inbox.

Curlew Chicks Have Arrived on Coochie 🐣

It’s that magical time of year again on Coochie, bird breeding season! Our island is alive with the haunting calls of the Curlews, as proud mums and dads keep a close eye on their newly hatched chicks.

If you’ve spotted these little fluff balls tottering about, you’ll know how tiny and vulnerable they are. Their parents are doing double duty,  feeding, guiding, and fiercely protecting them from danger. That’s why the curlew cries seem extra loud and long right now: it’s their way of warning off threats and keeping the family safe.

A few things we can all do to help during breeding season:

  • Give them space: if you see curlew families on the path, slow down or walk around.

  • Drive with care: chicks can dart suddenly across the road.

  • Enjoy the magic: pause and appreciate this special glimpse of new life on the island.

  • Mindful pets, (and pet parents) happy curlews: our feathered friends can feel stressed simply seeing dogs or cats walk past, so a little extra care helps keep the peace.

The curlew’s eerie night call may not be everyone’s favourite lullaby, but it’s part of what makes Coochie so unique. And right now, those cries are the soundtrack of proud parents raising the next generation.

Let’s celebrate our feathered neighbours and give them the best chance to thrive.

Here's a must see funny take on what REALLY happens when the curlews protect their chicks from traffic. Props to Sam Cotton for the vid.

Croquet or Crochet? Why not both?

Croquet

Fancy a game of croquet? 🏑✨
We’re out on the lawn every Thursday — doors open from 2:30 for a bit of practice or training, then it’s game time from 3 to 4pm.

It’s all about a laugh, a little strategy, and testing that eye–hand coordination (don’t worry, it’s easier than it sounds once you get swinging!).

✅ Your first game is free
✅ After that it’s just $3 a day
✅ All equipment supplied

We play right beside the oval, so you can’t miss us. New players just need to join the Recreation Club (only $5 a year, or $10 for the whole family) — forms are ready and waiting.

Come along, give it a go, and join the fun!

Crochet

The other thing we do for fun 🧶

Coochie is an island full of people with many talents. Thanks to the Crochet Club, we have several trees decorated as befitting an island like Coochie. While all the decorated trees will be displayed in future editions of this newsletter, and we'll have a feature on the crochet group, I'm popping Blue Beard here in honour of the amazing talent on the island and the Pirate Island on Coochiemudlo Island & Beach Markets.  Want to get involved? There’s something special about gliding across the water as the morning sun lights up Coochiemudlo.

The Coochie Paddlers head out every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (6.15am for a 6.30 start) in teams of six, and the focus is simple: fun first, fitness follows.

No need to stress about perfect technique (that will come in time). Don’t have a paddle? We’ll lend you one. It’s about moving, laughing, and sharing the water together — sometimes even trying to outpace the ferry!

👉 Curious to see what it’s like? Watch the video here: Watch the Coochie Paddlers in action

And if it looks like your kind of fun, why not join us? Morning sun, good company, and plenty of laughter await. I'm happy to pass along enquiries! Ping me here!

Redlands is rolling up its sleeves to tackle litter and marine debris, and it’s a real team effort. 🌊♻️

Council has been busy with all sorts of strategies, from litter clean-ups and waterway check-ups to education programs that get locals involved in protecting our patch of paradise.

They’ve also teamed up with the Tangaroa Blue Foundation, who run regular clean-up days and collect data to pinpoint the worst litter hotspots.

It’s all about raising awareness, encouraging sustainable habits, and keeping Redlands looking beautiful, not just for us, but for the generations to come. 💚
