Trivia QuestionβIn keeping with International Talk Like a Pirate Day, do you know why the US is still using imperial measurements, instead of Metric? (Hint: it has something to do with Pirates and Gold - not really Gold, but it's Pirates, so there has to be Gold somewhere! π΄β οΈπ°) Answer at the bottom of the newsletter |
Artist, Dot Knight, has lived on Coochiemudlo for twenty four years, where she feels deep gratitude for the quiet pleasures of seaside life and barefoot walks over sandy shores.
Moving from Central Queensland to Brisbane and pursuing her passion for art, Dot has studied Art and Design as well as Drawing and Painting with an impressive number of artist tutors, developing a profile in the arts through exhibitions and success in winning art competitions across Queensland.
Dot works from life and heart, using bold, simplified shapes to powerfully express the essential forms and positivity of the internal and external βscapesβ she presents.
βFrom Dark to Lightβ the title of Dotβs solo exhibition at the Curlew Gallery, reflects her ongoing theme of Hope in dark times. |

Spring in Queensland means itβs baby season for our flying-foxes π¦
πΆ! Most species give birth between September and December, after a six-month gestation following their autumn mating season.
At first, mums carry their tiny pups tucked under their wings everywhere they go π. After a few weeks though, the little ones are left in special βmaternity campsβ ποΈ β huge crΓ¨ches where pups can grow, learn, and stay safe while mum heads out to forage.
Itβs not chaos though! Each pup has its own special scent and call, and mothers use their sharp noses π and unique βvoicesβ πΆ to track down their babies, even in a noisy crowd. Sometimes mums still carry them short distances or give them a gentle nudge to start being more independent. Eventually, the youngsters are weaned and ready to forage on their own πΏ.
β οΈ If you happen to spot a baby bat on the ground during this season, please donβt try to handle it yourself. Instead, call the RSPCA on π 1300 278 358 right away. Trained carers know exactly how to help. Read More... |

π‘ Answer to Trivia Question: In 1793, the newly formed United States was eager to standardize its chaotic system of weights and measures. Different states used English, Dutch, and local systems, making trade and communication difficult. Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, a fan of Enlightenment ideals, saw promise in France’s new decimal-based metric system and requested official prototypes to help persuade Congress to adopt it.
France responded by sending scientist Joseph Dombey across the Atlantic with two precious items: a copper cylinder representing one kilogram and a rod exactly one meter long. But fate intervened, his ship was blown off course into the Caribbean, where British privateers (pirates sanctioned by the Crown) captured him. Dombey died in captivity, and the metric standards were auctioned off with the rest of the ship’s cargo.
Though the kilogram eventually resurfaced in the hands of an American surveyor, the moment had passed. Jefferson was no longer in office, and his successor lacked interest in metrication. The U.S. missed its chance to adopt the metric system early on, and centuries later, still clings to imperial units, thanks, in part, to a storm and a band of pirates. π΄β οΈβ π¦
