The Future of the Emerald Fringe Starts With Conversations Like This

I fully intended to attend the recent community consultation on the future of the Emerald Fringe... and then managed to get the time wrong.

Which, admittedly, is a very human Coochie moment 🙄

Still, by all reports, the meeting drew a strong turnout and plenty of thoughtful discussion around how the recently announced $100,000 State Government allocation could best support the protection and future management of this very special part of the island.

The consultation, led by local MP Rebecca Young MP, explored ideas around the care, conservation and long-term planning of the Fringe, which includes much of Coochie’s heritage-listed foreshore and environmental buffer zones.

The Coochiemudlo Island Heritage Society described the meeting as “fantastic,” noting the level of community interest in protecting and caring for the area for future generations.

The map above, shared by the Heritage Society, shows the heritage-listed boundary areas surrounding much of the island. Understanding exactly what falls within the Emerald Fringe is likely to become increasingly important as conversations continue around conservation, tourism, access, erosion management and the island’s long-term character.

What’s becoming clear already is that this is about far more than just a bucket of $$.

It’s really a conversation about what kind of island Coochie wants to be in the years ahead.
