Telepathy - Our Lost Sense

Neuroscience sheds light on ESP

Have You Ever Known Who Was Calling Before You Answered?

Or had a strange feeling that something was about to happen... only to discover later you were right?

Most of us have had one of those moments.

You think of someone you haven't spoken to in months... and the phone rings.

You wake from a vivid dream that later seems strangely significant.

Or you get what can only be described as a "nudge" to do something, without really knowing why.

Usually we laugh, call it coincidence and move on.

But what if it isn't?

That was the question I explored recently in a fascinating conversation with author and retired GP Dr Dianne Cartwright, whose book 'Telepathy our Lost Sense: Neuroscience sheds light on ESP' looks at these experiences through the lens of science rather than mysticism.

What surprised me wasn't that she believes telepathy exists.

It was that she believes almost half of us have experienced it.

During her years as a GP, Dr Cartwright casually surveyed 156 patients, asking whether they had ever experienced something they couldn't easily explain. Almost 50% described at least one experience that fitted what we commonly call ESP, and around 80% said they had known who was calling before answering the phone, or had contacted someone at almost the exact moment they were thinking of each other.

She believes these experiences are far more common than we realise.

The only reason we don't hear about them?

People rarely bring them up.

"I was just thinking about you..."

As we chatted, I found myself sharing stories I'd almost forgotten.

Like the countless times one of my daughters and I have called each other at precisely the same moment.

Or the time I felt a tiny nudge to buy a lottery ticket. I had absolutely no idea why. Three weeks later, I collected a $50,000 prize. I've never been able to explain that one.

Dr Cartwright wasn't interested in convincing me it was supernatural.

In fact, quite the opposite.

Her theory is that these experiences may eventually be explained by the brain's own electromagnetic activity, something science already knows exists. She points to the electrical activity constantly produced by our brains, hearts and nervous systems, and suggests there may be far more to discover about how we communicate than we currently understand.

Whether she's right or not remains an open question.

But it's certainly food for thought.

The part that really made me stop...

One idea kept coming back during our conversation.

Awareness.

Dr Cartwright isn't suggesting everyone should suddenly become psychic.

She simply encourages people to notice.

🤔Notice the times you think of someone just before they call.

🤔Notice those odd little nudges.

🤔Notice the moments that make you pause and say, "Well... that was strange."

Maybe start keeping a note of them.

Because once you begin paying attention, you may notice patterns you never saw before.

Coochie probably has a few stories...

One thing I've learnt from producing this newsletter is that our little island is full of remarkable people with remarkable experiences.

Some have stories about wildlife. Some about history. Some about weather.

And I'd be willing to bet quite a few have had an experience that doesn't fit neatly into a box.

Whether you call it intuition, coincidence, a sixth sense or simply good timing doesn't really matter.

Sometimes the most interesting conversations begin with someone quietly saying...

"You're going to think I'm crazy, but..."

So now I'm curious.
