Rumour or Reality? Is Coochie's Rubbish Dump About to Start Charging Residents?
Every community has its rumour mill. And to be fair, sometimes it's spot on.
This week someone mentioned that Coochiemudlo's rubbish dump would soon start charging locals to dispose of their household rubbish. With this year's rates notice showing significant increases in waste-related charges, it certainly sounded plausible.
So, rather than adding another rumour to the pile, I put on my detective hat and went digging.
๐ตHere's what I found...
Yes... but not exactly.
As part of Redland City Council's 2026-27 Budget, a new waste disposal system will begin on 6 October 2026.
From that date, households will receive 12 free visits per financial year to Council waste facilities. From the 13th visit onwards, disposal fees will apply.
So far, the rumour was on the right track.
But there was one very important detail missing...
๐ฐThe fine print matters
Hidden away in Council's own Frequently Asked Questions is this sentence:
"This change is only applicable to residents visiting the mainland recycling and waste centres at Birkdale and Redland Bay."
In other words...
The new 12-visit limit does not currently apply to Coochiemudlo's rubbish dump.
As things stand, domestic household rubbish for Coochie residents continues to be accepted free of charge at our local facility.
Why is the mainland changing?
Council says waste management costs are rising rapidly.
According to this year's Budget: The Queensland Waste Levy is expected to cost Council around $4 million next year, increasing to more than $8 million by 2030-31. As landfill capacity reduces, transporting waste outside the city is expected to add millions more in annual costs.
This year's rates also reflect those rising costs, with:
๐General rates increasing 5.47%
๐Environment and Coastal Management charges increasing 8.71%
๐Landfill remediation charges increasing 28.25%
It's easy to see how the rumour gained traction.
At the time of writing, Redland City Council continues to list Coochiemudlo's rubbish dump separately from the mainland facilities covered by the new residential waste allowance.
The way I read it is, unless Council announces further changes, Coochie residents can continue disposing of normal domestic household rubbish free of charge at the island's rubbish dump.
One thing I've learned over the years is that rumours often contain a grain of truth. Sometimes they're completely accurate. Sometimes they're just missing an important piece of the puzzle.
If you've heard something around the island and you're wondering whether it's fact or fiction, send it through.
I can't promise every rumour will make the newsletter... but I can promise that if I investigate it, I'll do my best to find the source, read the fine print, and separate the facts from the Facebook chatter.
After all, every good mystery deserves a curious detective.
