The Hairy Marys Episode 4 (don't watch if you have a queasy stomach!) |

...actually, yes, watch it... When Friendship Means Facing the Maggot Bucket
Episode 4 of The Hairy Marys finds comedy in one of caring’s least glamorous moments.
There are some parenting stories you share over coffee. Then there are the stories involving a forgotten bucket of dirty undies and a thriving community of maggots.
Episode 4 of The Hairy Marys, appropriately titled “The Maggot Situation,” lands firmly in the second category. And yes, it is every bit as revolting as it sounds.
But beneath the gagging, swearing and frantic clean-up is something surprisingly tender: the kind of friendship that does not disappear when life becomes messy. Really messy.
Coffee will have to waitQueen Nwa and Revolution are already familiar to viewers as two sharp, exhausted single mums negotiating caring, parenting and small-town life together.
This time, an ordinary visit is derailed by the discovery that a bucket of soiled underwear has been forgotten for just a little too long. “I forgot a bucket of dirty undies,” comes the confession.
“And now I’ve got maggots all through them.” There are moments when a good friend offers reassurance. There are moments when she offers practical advice.
And then there are moments when she rolls up her sleeves, declares that the sheriff has arrived and joins the poo party. That is friendship at its finest. Or perhaps its most aromatic.
The mess behind the funnyThe episode works because the situation is outrageous, but the exhaustion beneath it is completely believable.
For many carers, unpleasant bodily functions, dirty clothes and unexpected disasters are not occasional mishaps. They are simply part of the workload, usually arriving on top of school meetings, appointments, paperwork and all the ordinary jobs that still need doing.
Then, just as the clean-up begins, more demands come knocking.
Of course they do. The interruptions are absurdly well timed, but they also make a sharp point. Caring does not happen in a peaceful bubble where people have time, privacy and everything they need within reach. It happens while the phone rings, officials appear, forms demand attention and somebody inevitably wants something right now. Honestly, the maggots may be the most straightforward part of the day.
Laughing at what usually stays hiddenCreated and written by carers, and local to Coochie, The Hairy Marys keeps finding humour in parts of caring life that are rarely shown on screen.
There is no polished “inspirational carer” performance here. Nobody is pretending patience is endless or that love somehow makes the difficult bits disappear.
Instead, Episode 4 says something far more honest: sometimes caring is exhausting, disgusting and completely ridiculous.
And sometimes the only thing standing between you and total collapse is a friend willing to laugh, swear and help clean up the mess.
That is the unexpected heart of “The Maggot Situation.” The bucket may provide the comedy, but the friendship is what stays with you.

I dunno if I could handle half what carers do. The part about more demands coming in the middle? That’s my life too, minus the maggots!
Mate, no amount of Febreze fixes maggot undies. I nearly threw my phone across the room!
Saw this ep already and can confirm, the mess is somehow funny and sad at the same time. These mums are legends.
Is it bad that I was eating lunch while reading this? Regret! But honestly, love how they make the gross hilarious.
Respect for keeping it real about the nasty bits. My Nan was a carer and it’s honestly relentless some days.
Beryl never misses a chance to poke her nose in, does she? Every family’s got one. Episode had me cackling.
Dirty undies and maggots? Yeah, that’s about right. Carers need hazard pay!
I absolutely love Revolution and Queen Nwa’s friendship. Real mates turn up, even for a maggot crisis. We need more of this!
Can’t believe they actually showed the maggots. That’s some raw parenting right there. Made me laugh and cringe at the same time!
This nearly set off my gag reflex but honestly, I get it. My twins once hid socks under their beds till spring. Let’s just say, never again!
