The Coochie Community Shopping Service van woke up feeling… off. Usually by sunrise she was ready to go. Tyres pumped. Mirrors sparkling.
Keen as ever to make her way across to the mainland and back again carrying groceries, supplies, and the occasional surprisingly heavy “just a few things” order.
But this morning? Something wasn’t right.
She gave herself a little shake and tried to power through it anyway. Brave little thing. The engine gave a cough, a splutter, and one deeply concerning rattle that sounded suspiciously like:
Now, if you know the CCSS van, you’ll know she takes her role in the community very seriously.
This is a van that has faithfully transported countless shopping orders across barge runs, through rain squalls, summer heat, king tides, and those days when the wind comes sideways for absolutely no reason at all.
A van that has quietly helped people stay independent, connected, stocked up, and supported.
So being unwell? Absolutely not part of her plans. “I can’t be sick,” she worried. The volunteers tried to reassure her. “Don’t worry,” they said.
Still, the little van sat there feeling terribly apologetic about the whole thing. Nearby was a flashy mainland vehicle carrying on about horsepower and fuel efficiency and whatever else fancy vehicles talk about these days.
The CCSS van simply replied: That shut it down pretty quickly.
After a proper check-over involving serious faces, important-looking tools, and several thoughtful nods, the verdict was finally delivered: Nothing catastrophic. Honestly… relatable.
So for now, the little van is looking forward to recuperating, drinking metaphorical chicken soup, and taking a well-earned breather while everyone works out the best path forward.
And here’s the exciting bit… There’s already chatter about the possibility of one day getting the little van a “big brother” to help share the load. A larger vehicle. One with refrigeration. One that could step in and help support the growing needs of the community into the future.
The current van is reportedly very excited about this possibility and fully prepared to become the wise older sibling who says things like:
Because if there’s one thing she knows, it’s this: Coochie people look after each other.
The organisers of the CCSS would also like to thank everyone for their support, understanding and patience while things are being sorted out.
And… stay tuned. There may be some fundraising opportunities on the horizon to help keep this wonderful community service rolling long into the future. If you’ve suddenly had a flash of brilliance about fundraising ideas, sponsorships, raffles, events, grants, or “I know somebody who might be able to help” ideas, the team would genuinely love to hear them.
