On the morning of Saturday, 18 July 2026 at 11.30am, residents and visitors of Coochiemudlo Island will gather to commemorate the historic landing of Matthew Flinders with a vibrant re-enactment on Norfolk Beach.
This annual event blends education with entertainment, offering a delightful experience for all ages.
Attendees are encouraged to arrive at Norfolk Beach by 11:30 am to partake in the festivities.
On 19 July 1799, Lieutenant Matthew Flinders landed on the island from his sloop Norfolk to take a sextant reading as the sun reached its zenith.
He recorded the latitude as 27 degrees 34 minutes 59 seconds south and named the island Sixth Island.
The tradition of re-enacting this significant event began in 1977, initiated by island resident Edward 'Ted' Jones.
As a former aircraft navigator and engineer, Jones determined that Coochiemudlo was indeed Flinders' Sixth Island.
He portrayed Flinders in the re-enactments for over two decades, fostering a deep connection between the community and its rich history.
In addition to the re-enactment, the Coochiemudlo Island Heritage Society will host a stall at the Flinders Day Markets, offering insights into the island's past and present.
Visitors can explore various stalls featuring arts, crafts, fashion, homewares, and food, making it a perfect family outing.
For those planning to attend, the island is accessible via an eight-minute ferry ride from Victoria Point.
Once on the island, it's a short walk to the event venues.
Whether you're a history enthusiast or seeking a unique cultural experience, the Flinders Day celebrations on Coochiemudlo Island offer a memorable journey into Australia's maritime heritage. |
