Struggling to Find a Job? Your Centrelink Hours Could Help Coochie |
Meet some of your requirements while doing something that genuinely matters |

If you’re meeting Centrelink or Workforce Australia requirements, there may be a more rewarding way to complete some of them than sending off yet another job application.
Volunteer hours can count towards mutual obligation requirements, depending on your age and individual circumstances. Some eligible jobseekers can fully meet their requirements by completing 30 hours of approved activities each fortnight. For others, volunteering can earn points and contribute towards their target.
And the Coochie Community Shopping Service could use your help.
A few hours can make a very real differenceOur Shopping Service helps island residents who may be elderly, housebound, unable to drive or simply struggling to manage a mainland shopping trip on their own.
It might seem like a straightforward practical service, but to the person waiting for their groceries, it means independence, security and the reassurance that their community hasn’t forgotten them.
Honestly, that beats firing off an application for a job you don’t even want.
The Shopping Service may be able to provide some of the volunteer hours you need while giving you useful experience, local connections and the satisfaction of helping your neighbours.
Check before you beginCentrelink and Workforce Australia requirements vary according to your age, circumstances and Job Plan. Before counting volunteer hours towards your obligations, speak with your employment services provider or check your Workforce Australia account to make sure the activity can be approved and correctly recorded.
Read the official Workforce Australia information about volunteering.

If more people helped out, maybe services like this could expand. So much need out there.
Anything that makes the island stronger is a plus. Cheers to the volunteers.
Better than wasting time applying for jobs you don't get. At least this feels good.
My mate did this and said it counts for full points if you do enough hours. Worth checking your account though.
Will sign up once I update my job plan. If anyone has experience, let me know how it went for you!
I've done community shopping on the mainland, it’s so needed. Some seniors really have no one else.
Just hope people remember to check with Centrelink first, red tape can be a nightmare!
I always see the van around and wondered how to join. Might give it a go.
Do you need a car to help? I don't drive but still want to pitch in.
Sounds like a win win to me. You meet people, help out, and meet your obligations!
Good idea, but I can see some people abusing it just to tick boxes.
Big respect to John and Rosemary for organising. Island life relies on neighbours helping out.
Is it all shopping or do you help with other tasks? Might sign up if it’s flexible.
I don't agree we should HAVE to volunteer to get a payment, but at least this helps.
Shame this sort of thing isn't more supported by the government. The demand is definitely there.
Volunteering looks good on your resume too. Good experience if you want to work in care.
I'm always worried about doing the paperwork right for these things. Anyone know how fussy they are?
Does it only count for certain age groups? My cousin’s trying to sort his points.
My nan relies on this service. Thank you to everyone who helps out!
Would this count for people on Disability Support too? Not sure how flexible they are.
Way better than sitting at a computer spamming CVs. At least you can make a difference.
Hope young folk see the value in it, not just for Centrelink, but just for being helpful.
It's nice to see options like this for meeting obligations. Makes it feel less box-ticky.
Love this! Volunteering feels a lot more useful than another job app. Good for everyone.
