Bushcare on Coochie in Queensland, Australia

Come and help us look after our island's beautiful natural places

Coochiemudlo Island, affectionately known as "Coochie," is a cherished part of Quandamooka Country, the traditional lands of the Quandamooka People.

These lands have been home to the Nunukul, Goenpul, and Ngugi clans for over 25,000 years.

Today, the island's community continues to honor this rich heritage through dedicated environmental stewardship.

One such initiative is the monthly Bushcare working bee, where volunteers come together to preserve and enhance the island's natural beauty.

These gatherings are not only rewarding but also foster a sense of camaraderie among participants.

As one volunteer noted, "It's rewarding work, we're a cheerful mob, and our morning tea's a treat."

In addition to Bushcare, the island hosts Dunecare sessions on the first Saturday of each month.

These sessions focus on removing invasive weeds from the Emerald Fringe, a unique public land that encircles the island, allowing uninterrupted access to its shores.

Participants enjoy great company, along with tea and cake, making the experience both productive and enjoyable.
